Pelvic Discomfort Women with large fibroids may feel heaviness or pressure in their lower abdomen or pelvis. Often this is described as a vague discomfort rather than a sharp pain. Sometimes, the enlarged uterus makes it difficult to lie face down, bend over or exercise without discomfort.

Hormones. Estrogen and progesterone are the hormones that make the lining of your uterus thicken every month during your period.


Genetics. Researchers have found genetic differences between fibroids and normal cells in the uterus.


Other growth factors.


Extracellular matrix (ECM).


Can you feel fibroids in your stomach?


Abdominal and Uterine Enlargement – As fibroids grow larger, women may feel them as hard lumps in the lower abdomen. Especially large fibroids can even give the abdomen the appearance of pregnancy, along with a feeling of heaviness and pressure.


Can you feel fibroids by pressing on your stomach?


Abdominal Pressure and Pain – Women suffering from large fibroids may experience pressure or pain in the abdomen or lower back. While it may feel like menstrual cramps, it may be a result of fibroids. Abdominal and Uterine Enlargement – As fibroids grow larger, women may feel them as hard lumps in the lower abdomen.


What problems can fibroids cause?


Although uterine fibroids usually aren't dangerous, they can cause discomfort and may lead to complications such as a drop in red blood cells (anemia), which causes fatigue, from heavy blood loss. Rarely, a transfusion is needed due to blood loss.


Can fibroids make you leak urine?


Women can experience pressure on the bowel and/or bladder due to fibroids. This can cause constipation, frequent urination and incontinence. In some rare cases, fibroids can press on the ureters (tubes which carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder), leading to kidney dysfunction.


What are the symptoms of fibroid in a woman?


In women who have symptoms, the most common signs and symptoms of uterine fibroids include:


Heavy menstrual bleeding.


Menstrual periods lasting more than a week.


Pelvic pressure or pain.


Frequent urination.


Difficulty emptying the bladder.


Constipation.


Backache or leg pains.
